We got 3 mares and 1 yearling (stud) Thursday July 17, 2008 ( Max, adoption pending; Trooper, adoption pending; Sugar; and Satin) We were contacted by the Juneau County Deputy Sheriff/Humane Officer asking for help in taking these horses due to neglect. If anyone is interested in adopting or sponsoring any of these horses please contact Shirley at 608-742-3758 or 608-228-0369 or you may also contact Nadine at 608-617-4939.
This is Sugar, she is a 6-7 year old Belgian from the
Juneau County region. She
is approximately 16 + hh. She is very friendly! Along with Max and
Satin, there is a chance that Sugar could be pregnant due to when they were at
their previous home. The stallion had fallen in a hole on the person's
property and had gotten stuck, the Juneau County Sheriff's Department had to
euthanize him as they could not get him out. We do not know what kind of a
horse he was or color as we did not get that information.
UPDATE:
August 26, 2008. A friend has been helping with the horses
and did some work with Sugar. She is very ride-able and is really sweet.
Sugar did not know much ground work or flexing but is picking it up pretty good.
We do not know if she is pregnant yet, hopefully soon we will find out.
UPDATE: September 29, 2008. Sugar had been on a 30 day trial period
of a person wanting to adopt Sugar but the other person's horse did not like
Sugar and so they did not get along and wanted to fight that is why she was
brought back to us. We have been doing some ground work with her and she
needs a lot more-she is very stiff but willing at times to listen. We did
think she was very ride-able but as we found out by the person where Sugar was
at that Sugar was really good in the round pen, but once you got her out in the
open she wanted to go and could not be stopped. I guess that is why we
thought she was very ride-able. So a person that has a lot of experience
with horses and training would be the idea person to adopt her. We are
going to continue working with her to try and get her soft and supple and maybe
ride-able out in the open unless a person that has experience with horses comes
along and is interested in adopting her. Like I said until then we will
try to help get her trained in a more safe way. Sugar is also very pushy,
I worked with her Saturday the 28th of September and did a lot of backing,
coming and stopping when saying "whoa" (which she did not want to do very well
at all), but I did get her to at least start to listen somewhat. I also
did some flexing-Boy is she stiff she did not want to flex at all and would go
in circles! I really watched my feet as for her to not step on them!
After awhile of doing some flexing she started to realize what it was that I was
asking her to do, but, I know Rachel has also been doing work with her also and
each time we do something with her it's as if it is still new to her and she
doesn't know what we're asking, so we are going to continue to work with her as
I said and hopefully after enough consistency she will get better. She is
a very sweet girl and loves to be brushed and petted so I know that with the
right person and the consistency of working with her she'll be an excellent
horse for that person! I absolutely love her personality. We also
have to remember that this horse has had NO handling or training ever
until coming to our place, so we need to take in consideration for that and be
patient and not get upset with her if she doesn't do something right or right
away because she just doesn't understand quite what it is that she's being asked
to do. So again, consistency with her is the answer. ALSO, she is
not pregnant!!!
This is Satin, she is a 13 to 14-year-old Arabian from the Juneau County region. She is 15 hh. She is the momma of Trooper. She is a very sweet mare! She is not ready for adoption yet as you can tell! She is approximately 150-175 pounds underweight, we have her on a special food regimen and feed her and baby every four hours, along with all the grass hay they can eat! She is a beautiful girl, but we don't think she's been broke to ride? We cannot wait until she fills out and we can truly see just how Beautiful she really is! We also had the vet give her her coggins and shots the next morning after getting her and the others, so as soon as we receive the results of the coggins and get her up to par she will be available for adoption. Went and saw her the other day, can tell why they named her Satin-her coat is so soft that it feels like satin! She has the most beautiful mane and is so sweet! You just fall in love with all of these horses as soon as you meet them! UPDATE: August 15, 2008. Shirley had the vet out to check her as her belly was definitely filling out but ribs still showing and we had some suspicion but needed it verified if she was pregnant. A month prior to us getting the horses from the Juneau County region there was a stallion on the property and had fallen in a hole, the Juneau County Sheriff's Department tried to get him out but couldn't so they had to euthanize him. We weren't sure but kept an eye on the mares to see if we noticed any changes and we did. We had our vet out to check Satin and from her pre-examination she believes she is pregnant. The next time she comes to the farm she will be bringing her ultrasound machine to help verify for sure if she and sugar are pregnant. UPDATE: September 29, 2008. I don't know the exact date that the vet came out and did an ultrasound to see if she was truly pregnant or not-she's NOT!!!! Rachel did some ground work with Satin and found out that she is not broke to ride. She needs a lot of ground work also, but with the right person I believe she will make an excellent horse! She is just pretty-the pictures don't do her justice!! Her coat is so amazingly soft!! She is also filling out really good. I will try to get an updated picture of her soon, the last couple times I been out to the farm I'd forgotten my camera!
This is a picture of Satin taken August 26, 2008.
She is really looking good!
